Dr Dirk van der Kley is Head of the Genes and Geopolitics Program and Senior Technology Research Fellow at the Australian National University’s National Security College, where he leads work on how biotechnology advances reshape geopolitics are and vice versa. His team publishes the widely read Substack “Bio Brawl” which closely tracks China’s biotech development.

Dirk previously held research roles at the Lowy Institute and at China Matters. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the Australian National University, has published widely in policy and academic outlets, and regularly briefs government, industry and international audiences on technology, China and geopolitics.
