Grant is a Principal Scientist and the Science Team Leader of the Pathogen Biosecure Environments team at the Bioscience Science Institute, with a long career in plant pathology and plant biosecurity in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. He has led the development and implementation of molecular diagnostics and new control technologies for viral, bacterial and fungal plant pathogens and their insect vectors.​ As part of this research, he lead the research to identify potential RNAi pathogenicity targets in the fungal genome and collaborated with Australian colleagues to demonstrate targeted myrtle rust control options using dsRNA/RNAi technology.
